What makes muscles get bigger?

by Jul 3, 2019Blog, Muscle Gain

One study by Hakkinen measured levels of hormones associated with muscle growth including insulin like growth factor, testosterone and human growth hormone during a 10 week period where participants used a number of different rep schemes.

They used a single leg extension (just on one leg) and measured hormones and muscular hypertrophy in both the working leg and the leg that did nothing during the study.

The results showed that although the rested leg showed increased levels of the anabolic hormones only the leg that had worked and contracted had grown.

Your anabolic hormones are of course highly involved in muscle growth but training volume at the correct intensity is what drives muscle growth.
