Trainer focus: Going all out from the off

Welcome to the first in our new series of trainer blogs. Today, Robbie takes us through how to get started on an effective training regime.

When anyone embarks on a new training or diet regime, they usually follow a predictable pattern. They start off getting sick of how they currently look or feel and then swiftly decide to give up everything; no junk food, no alcohol, no carbs, no fat, no going out, no having any fun. They just give up everything.

Usually this coincides with a decision to train hard as often as possible. After all, if doing one class at the gym is good, surely doing three in a row is even better, right?

Unfortunately the next step is more often than not a decision to give up. It’s totally understandable, as trying to give up everything at once and train like a crazed Olympian is far too punishing a regime to stick to. If you’ve worked with me or read my posts before however you’ll know that the key to lasting results is picking a training and diet plan that is both sensible and sustainable for you.

The tricky bit is taking all of that enthusiasm from the early stages and really harnessing it. Making smaller, more sensible changes to your lifestyle is the best way to prepare yourself, letting you get started on an action plan that you know you can keep up with.

Patience is also a massive factor when looking to make changes to your body. You didn’t get out of shape overnight so you need to be patient and accept that it will take time to get back into shape. You need to enjoy the journey. Make positive changes to your lifestyle that you can embrace and the changes to your body will soon follow.
