In December last year my close friend died from cancer.  I had spent the last two years supporting her and her family through the diagnosis, treatment and her final days when she chose to die at home.  During this time, I gradually cut out all the exercise and things that I enjoyed doing, not only to spend time helping her but because I struggled to find the energy and enthusiasm to do the things that I had once loved.  I turned to food more and more to help me cope with everything that was going on.  I’ve never had the best relationship with food and have regularly veered between under eating and bingeing and managed my weight by running a huge amount.  By the end of last year I was the heaviest I had ever been, none of my clothes fit, my back hurt from just walking a short distance and everything in life felt like a struggle.

Two days after my friend died, I contacted Storm on Facebook as I knew I needed to try and take some positive steps to changing how I was feeling.  I had done some research into local personal trainers and Spencer and the team at Storm came across as people who looked at each client as an individual and weren’t going to provide the ‘one plan fits all’ approach.  My self-esteem was at an all time low and going to PT and changing my diet wasn’t something I felt like I was going to be able to do by myself so I asked Noel to come with me.  It wasn’t something we could particularly afford, and he had absolutely no interest in going on a diet and was quite happy about going to the gym, lifting what he felt like at the time and then having a few weeks off when things started to hurt!  He agreed to come along to support me and I sent a message on Facebook that night.  The following day was Christmas Eve and as we drove down to visit my family Storm emailed me the details and I messaged back to confirm a planning meeting.  I remember thinking they must have thought I was mad, who spends Christmas Eve thinking about setting up PT sessions?!

On our initial meeting it was clear Nadine knew your stuff and I felt we were in good hands as she assessed our movement and form and explained how training and nutrition would work. Nadine was really supportive of our suggestion of one PT session a week and she programmed a further 2 for us to do at the gym by ourselves.  I must admit to being totally sceptical when she only reduced our calories by 90 per day that first week, the concept of reverse dieting was totally new to me  but the results speak for themselves, I’ve never lost weight whilst eating so much and doing just 3 weight sessions a week.  The fact that Nadine is so non-judgemental makes it easy to be honest about everything, to log the bad days and move on, and to realise that it is consistency that is key and gets results.   Our sessions at Storm were great, quite often we had the place to ourselves but when other trainers and clients were there everyone was so positive and friendly, it was a great environment to be a part of.

The changes over the last 6 months have been huge, yes, I’ve lost weight and am stronger but more importantly for me, I’ve started to love the process again.  I now have the confidence to go to the gym by myself for the first time, I’ve joined a martial arts class that I’ve always wanted to try but never had the confidence to go to and I love it.  I love seeing the progress in how much I can lift now to when we first started and am really looking forward to this continuing so those numbers can improve further!

As for Noel, who had no interest in losing weight and was only doing this for me, he’s now 2 stone lighter, is lifting with far better form, has been pretty much injury free for the  whole 6 months and was the first one to suggest we keep working with Nadine online when we couldn’t afford to keep up the weekly PT.  It is great to see him so fit and healthy and learning about macros has totally changed the way he cooks.

I started training with Nadine at a real low point in my life. I’d always struggled with my weight and had broken up with my long-term girlfriend so my self-esteem was shot. I knew that something needed to change, and after talking to several personal trainers, I met Nadine who instantly impressed me with her professionalism, expertise and genuine desire to help me make the changes that I needed to make.

I should also add that I’m dyspraxic, so, I’m not always the easiest person to work with because I’m uncoordinated and clumsy, which, as you can imagine, isn’t ideal where physical activity is concerned.

However, I’ve enjoyed training a lot more than I expected to – Nadine is super patient with me, and great at showing me what I should be doing and how to do it and at a pace that works for me.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I HAVE SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS, CAN I STILL SIGN UP?
Our coaches have experience working with complex dietary needs and we can cater to almost any dietary preference. Just make sure you provide details in the starter form or send an email to onlinecoaching@storm-fitness.com before your coach starts working on your program.
I’VE GOT A PRE-EXISTING INJURY, CAN I STILL SIGN UP?
Most of the time the answer is YES. However, to be safe we ask you to fill in the application form and give us some details of your pre-existing injury. We can then assess your suitability to perform certain training programs and exercises.
I DO SHIFT WORK, CAN I STILL SIGN UP?
In most circumstances the answer to this is yes, we’ve worked with a lot of shift workers and find that there is plenty of opportunity to train.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I SIGN UP?
After purchasing your package and completing the forms linked to our ‘thank you’ page, you’ll receive an email from your coach within 3 working days inviting you to join our coaching platform where you’ll find details of your program.
HOW IS MY PLAN TAILORED TO ME?
Each plan is individually created using the information you provide in your starter form and weekly check-in form enabling us to build a customised training and nutrition plan that focusses on what you want to achieve.
HOW DOES CHECK-IN WORK?
Your coach will send you a link to our online check-in form that you’ll need to complete and send to us with your progress pictures each week. The check-in window is 0800 Thursday – 1200 Saturday. Your coach will send you feedback within 24 hours of checking in based on the information you provide.
DO I NEED ACCESS TO A GYM FACILITY?
Yes. It is best if you have access to a facility with free weights and general equipment. These are usually available in most gyms, however, if you’re unsure or unable to complete any exercises, then we’ll find alternatives for you in most cases.
DO I NEED TO HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH LIFTING WEIGHTS?
Our expert coaches can help a wide range of client, however, it is recommended that you have a basic understanding of exercises in the gym. We’ll give you access to videos and detailed instructions of how to perform exercises assigned to you by your coach but if there’s anything you are struggling with ask your coach for help.
HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO TRAIN EACH WEEK?
Once you’ve completed the sign-up form we’ll have a good idea of how often you can train. We’ll help you find the right balance so that you can progress effectively and safely. It’s usually 2 to 5 times per week, but it will depend on your individual goals and the program you’re following.
DO I NEED TO USE MY FITNESS PAL?
Using my fitness pal is a great way to get accurate with your nutrition. However, if it doesn’t suit your lifestyle your coach will work with you to understand what you need and will guide you towards which method could work best for you.
HOW STRICT IS THE NUTRITION PLAN?
Your goals and the timeframe you want to reach them in will dictate how strict you need to be. We have seen that if you take on 90% of your calories and above from food sources with a high nutrient density you could have 10% of your calories from whatever you like without drastically affecting your results.
DO I NEED TO STICK TO THE MEALS THAT ARE ON MY PLAN OR CAN I MIX THINGS UP?
You can absolutely mix things up! Your plan is to give you an idea of how to get started to hit your calorie and macronutrient goals. Use the suggested foods list in the Storm Online Handbook for a comprehensive list of foods to eat.
CAN I EAT OUT?
Of course! Just let your coach know in advance so that your nutrition plan can be adjusted to accommodate a meal out.
IF I HAVE A QUESTION HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO WAIT FOR REPLY?
Storm Lifestyle clients can ask their Storm coach questions at any time of the day using our coaching platform and will receive a reply within 24 hours of submission.
Storm Elite clients can send an SMS directly to their coach and should get a reply within 2 hours, but we politely ask that anything not requiring an urgent response isn’t sent after 7 pm.
WHAT IF I NEED MORE SUPPORT?
Additional support can be provided via Skype call. Please contact your coach for options and prices.
CAN I DRINK ALCOHOL DURING THE PROGRAMME?
If you want the most out of your plan and achieving your goals then minimal alcohol intake is recommended. However, if you’re having a night out and likely to drink alcohol then let your coach know so that your plan can be adjusted. Likewise, if you go out and end up drinking more than intended just let your coach know as soon as possible.
