Can you get stronger in your 40’s and 50’s?

by Jan 25, 2019Blog, Healthy Lifestyle, Muscle Gain, Strength and Conditioning

Here’s a question I get asked a lot… in my view for most of us the answer is yes! Absolutely!

In the first graph are the men’s world records in the snatch (a weightlifting movement) the records are for the 94kg weight class from open (any age) all the way up to 85 years.

Now, if you are already an elite weightlifter and you’ve reached your potential, the bad news is your strength is likely to decline steadily. For everyone else though, who has yet to train properly and consistently, there is a good chance you could continue to get stronger for a long time to come (see my fictional example).

One caveat to mention here though. We don’t train 50 year olds like we train 30 year olds, managing injury risk and joint health can’t be ignored if you want to get stronger past your 50th birthday!
